OLD COACH ROAD CYCLE PATH

Ride the Old Coach Road from Horopito down to Ohakune

The trail begins at Clydes access road (16km North of Ohakune on SH 4 or 20 km South of National Park Village). Cycle over the railway at Horopito, you may park here, then bike over the Clydes access fords (but never when they are flooding as they will sweep you away !) Travel the flat stretch through a farm to the DoC boundary and the true beginning of the Coach road.

Your journey begins at 800metres ASL with a gradual drop to Ohakune near 650 metres covering 9 kilometers of gently undulating terrain which is ideal for all level of cyclists and families. Along the way you will see the unused Taonui viaduct and spectacular glimpses over the Waimarino plains. Closer to Ohakune the journey has a side trip to the Hapuawhenua Viaduct, a highlight of engineering, restored for you to bike over and enjoy. From here it is not far to Marshalls road and a flat road cycle back to the township of Ohakune.

The cycle trail has DoC informative signs displayed along the way showing the history and photos of the main trunk line's construction and the role of the 'Old Coach Road'.

Plan for a half day trip, which can be achieved in most weathers, (apart from when the fords are flooding at the Horopito end! )
